Rotary Club of Cornwall Sunrise & Staples donates to the Agapè Centre.

A gift card worth $1000 was presented to the Agapè Centre to help provide school supplies to help support individuals that need a hand-up!  These were funds raised during August and early September by the staff at Staples with the help of the Rotary Club of Cornwall Sunrise.

We want to thank the Rotary Club of Cornwall Sunrise and Staples Cornwall for their support!

The 2014 WALK is on February 22, 2014.

The Coldest Night of the Year is a non-competitive 5- and 10-km winter-walk fundraiser supporting select Canadian charities that serve the hungry, homeless and hurting in cities and communities across Canada.

Held on Saturday, February 22, 2014, the walk provides participants the opportunity to experience a hint of the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness by walking for a few hours during a cold Canadian night in the dead of winter.

Great Hit to Start Out Hunger Awareness Week!

14 amateur boxers duked it out in the ring on Saturday, May 04th for Agapè’s Amateur Boxing Fundraiser. This high energy fundraiser proved itself again with an excellent turnout of over 120 people. Cornwall’s own Tony Luis, Quebec Boxing Council Lightweight Champion provided commentary along with Scott Rogers and Councillor Dave Murphy was a fabulous Emcee. This hard hitting charity event at the Best Western Plus Parkway Inn benefitted the Agapè Centre to help knock out the effects of hunger, as well as, Champs Eastside Boxing Club. An inspiring speech was given at intermission by Jill Perry, two time Canadian Champion, sharing her story and encouraging people to get out there and volunteer with youth.

This event was made possible with the support of the numerous Sponsors: BMO Nesbit Burns, Grant-Marion Construction, KnorPlast Inc., Emard Bros. Lumbar, Adams, Sherwood, Swabey & Follon, Cardinal & Associates, Cornwall Tire, Bergeron Electric, Cornwall Overhead Door, Multi Doors & Windows, Cogeco, Standard Freeholder and our main supporter Scotiabank. A special thank you also goes to Dr. Lemire for being the doctor on-site for the boxers and her husband, who won the “reverse draw” and donated it back to the Agapè Centre.

Hunger Awareness Week starts today! To get involved, check out our website Let’s knock out the effects of Hunger!

Hunger Awareness Week: May 06-10 Give it Up…for Hunger

Give It Up for Hunger

For Hunger Awareness Week – Residents are asked to Give it Up…for Hunger to better understand the challenges of people living with hunger.
Hunger is a complex issue with many root causes and in a country as prosperous as Canada; it’s shocking to see so many struggle to get enough food.   Over 1,000 individuals turn to the Agapè Centre for support each month, and of those, 400 are children and youth. The Agapè Centre is asking all residents to mark Hunger Awareness Week – May 06 to May 10th, and to take part in our activities– to make a positive impact on the issue  of hunger across the city.

The week of activities includes convening a competition for local high school students, an address from economist Dr. Sylvain Charlebois, tours and film screenings and a spaghetti dinner to create an awareness on the issue of hunger in Cornwall and in Canada.

Agapè Centre receives $150,000 from the Ontario Trillium Foundation

Cornwall, Ontario – The Agapè Centre has a brighter future, thanks to a $150,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. MPP for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry, Jim McDonell joined OTF’s representative Tracey Beauregard in congratulating the Agapè Centre at the announcement ceremony.

“I am very pleased that through this grant the Ontario Trillium Foundation is supporting the Agapè Centre’s mission, and they will be better able to meet the needs of our community.” stated MPP Jim McDonell.

Over the years, the Agapè Centre has experienced an increase demand for services and is in need of a sustainability plan to maintain their service levels and to make certain no one goes hungry in the community. “Thanks to grants such as this one from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, we will be able to enhance the organization’s ability to raise funds and increase the Thrift Store’s sales revenues.” said Alyssa Blais, Executive Director of the Agapè Centre. “With a dedicated person committed to developing a much needed sustainability plan, we hope to utilize our internal resources more efficiently and effectively. We are thankful for the Ontario Trillium Foundation’s commitment to meet essential community needs”

The grant will also allow the Agapè Centre to hire a full-time sorting assistant to improve the donation sorting process as well as, launch a brand-new fundraising technology  – mobile giving.

The Agapè Centre is a not-for profit organization, supported by the community to ensure that no family goes hungry, cold or without any of the basic necessities of life. The Agapè Centre has been providing food, clothing and furniture to more than 1,000 people each month for the better part of the decade.

A leading grant maker in Canada, the Ontario Trillium Foundation strengthens the capacity of the voluntary sector through investments in community-based initiatives. An agency of the Government of Ontario, OTF builds healthy and vibrant communities.

1st Annual snowsuits for warmth Penny Drive

Penny Drive for Snowsuits

The Agapè Centre wants the community to start donating their pennies to help keep area children warm this winter. Each penny raised will go towards the snowsuit fund to purchase snowsuits for children.

“We want to collect as many pennies as possible and this is the first year that the Agapè Centre is holding a penny drive. Anyone can donate a penny or two. We want students and children to get involved as giving builds great character” said executive director Alyssa Blais. For each stack of pennies donated, the Agapè Centre and Computer Sense will provide an entry form for a chance to win an 8GB IPOD which has been graciously donated by Computer Sense.

With the penny about to go out of circulation, as it costs 1.6 cents to produce each penny, the Agapè Centre would like to help people “get rid of” their pennies. The draw for the IPOD will be held January 7th, 2013. “It will be exciting to see how many pounds of pennies we can collect in the span of 7 weeks. Imagine one million pennies can purchase 250 snowsuits. So Cornwall start mining your pockets, purse bottoms and sofa cushions.”

Please share your warmth with a child.

Snowsuit Program

The Agapè Centre purchases 500 snowsuits a year to give to children in need. No matter what you are able to give, each and every dollar counts right now. We must continue to ensure that no child is left out in the cold. To do that, we rely entirely on donations to fund the program. The staff & volunteers at the center is committed and thanks to their commitment, we are able to keep our administrative costs low and focus 100% of our financial resources on purchasing snowsuits.

We must continually, however, seek out new ways in which we may sustain our program. We hope that you will consider supporting this most worthwhile endeavor.

Please purchase a snowsuit right now.

Agape’s Snowsuit Fund

Every year, we receive over 500 snowsuit requests for kids up to the age of 16 & that’s a lot of cold kids. The need is real & present. Please help kids of less fortunate families in Cornwall have one very basic necessity: warmth during our bitter winter.

I can’t express how grateful I am to receive 3 snowsuits for my daughter and 2 sons. Without your support, they would of endured a difficult winter – A Cornwall single mother
